Jaroslav (Jarda) Cerbenka was born and raised in Prague, where he studied medicine and, later, human genetics. During the Soviet invasion in 1968, he emigrated to Minnesota, where he teaches at the University of Minnesota. Mal d’Afrique is his first book of stories.
